*with the generous assistance of many Global Cohort B.Ed colleaguesUnder the supervision of Professor Ng-A-Fook, my colleagues and I had the opportunity to work with grades 5 and 6 First Nations students from students to create public service announcements (PSAs) that enabled these Algonquin youth to voice their concerns about an issue that was important to them, exchange ideas with education students, and learn techniques to create effective PSAs. In turn, we would have an opportunity to get to know interests and concerns of First Nations youth, develop our teaching practices, run small group activities, integrate technology, and develop a connection with the community.
During our visits to the community we were privileged to meet and discuss our strategies with the elders, teachers, and students. As we worked together with the students to shape PSAs, we were inspired by their energy, creativity and compassion! The experience of this project allowed me to reaffirm my commitment to addressing issues of diversity and equity. However, it also developed my awareness of the importance of building bridges – partnerships that allow for better understanding within and between our communities, as well as building capacity for creating positive social change.
